Bob Porter

My career started very early on the golf course when I was 15 and worked as a grounds crew member at the Detroit Lakes Country Club in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. As my passion for golf management grew, I decided to pursue a degree in Turf and Golf Course Management from Anoka Technical College in 1992. Since graduating, I have had the pleasure of working on a spectrum of golf courses, from the high end private to the mom and pop public facilities. Throughout my 20+ year career, I have continuously sought out unique ways of recording, planning, and tracking golf course data and information.

With technology advances in the last five years, I have been able to integrate technology in the areas of pesticide management, spray application tracking, supply inventory tracking, golf course mapping, irrigation inspection and repairs, and equipment inventory/usage.

I am a recognized leader in the use of technology for the golf industry. I have given technology driven presentations at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s (GCSAA) Annual Golf Industry Show. I have also provided technology assistance to the Test Drive Technology Center as well as the development and implementation of the Minnesota Golf Course Superintendents Association (MGCSA) new website. Several of my ideas regarding technology has been covered by several industry related media outlets.

My extensive knowledge of Apple applications has been utilized by the medical device industry in several ways; i.e. converting Windows based media files to iPad friendly files, providing guidance and troubleshooting during the development/implementation of an iPad based training program, and mobile app selection/training for executive staff.

As a husband and father of two teenage boys, I have integrated technology into several aspects of our family life and given us a whole new way to interact. We employ multiple integrated calendars to organize school, work and extracurricular activities. Text, email, and FaceTime keep us all “in the loop” and “on the same page” while technology also assists us with creating A+ school projects and instant photos keep us in touch with family both near and far.

I very much look forward to being a contributor to iTurfApps. I am excited to share some of my knowledge with the turf industry. I also look forward to learning from the turf industry as we all move forward thru the ever changing face of technology.

I graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management in 2006. In November 2005, I was hired as an assistant at Oakley Country Club located in Watertown, MA. My stay there was short, and after only 14 months, I left and went to Scotts LawnCare in Southborough, MA. Scotts was only temporary until something opened back up on the golf course side. And only 5 months later I was asked to be the assistant at Stow Acres Country Club located in Stow, MA.Working as an assistant at Stow, I was immediately introduced to the daily role. Irrigation trouble shooting, main line breaks, and personnel management became some of my key responsibilities. By the end of that season, I had a very good handle on my role, but in December 2007 that role would quickly change. The superintendent told us he was moving onto another company. Just like any hungry and determined assistant, I put in for the position. After a very serious interview process, I was named Superintendent in March 2008.

Now, as Class A Superintendent and working on Certification, I feel that I am well versed in many aspects of golf course management. However, I feel that I use technology on the golf course to its fullest extent. Whether its using my iPad to control my irrigation system or using Google to track all of the necessary data needed, I know that Stow Acres maintenance department is fully equipped when it comes to technology uses in turf. It has been a true passion of mine since middle school. I grew up with computers; in fact, I had computer classes in fourth and fifth grade. Facebook was built when I was a Freshman in college. Twitter was created shortly before I graduated college. I have been lucky enough to grow up in an era that is completely immersed in fast advancing technology. I consistently educate myself in the latest technology news on the web and on twitter. Although a bit overkill, I am often seen with my iPhone or my iPad in hand. I am a proud father of two kids, and my two-year-old is taking a fast liking to the iPad. It is only a matter of time before she will be instructing others how to use certain features. It’s amazing and awesome! Recently, I have taken a very keen liking to Google Drive and everything it has to offer from an efficiency and collaboration standpoint. Not only am I a contributing administrator to iTurfapps, but I educate others on various platforms from physical presentations to podcasts.

Founder – Women in Turf

Over the years I have attended conferences and schools, and the one thing I noticed it lacked were females, I have only met a handful of talented women in my industry and I feel like I fail at connecting with more. I created Women in Turf to provide a community for women to get connected and talk turf. This has opened up a whole different dimension of connection, not only do I get to meet new female turf managers, but finally finding a way to motivate and encourage personal and professional development with these ladies in hopes to inspire more women to grow in the turf industry.

A few goals that I would love to see with this group are to eventually have leadership sessions available geared towards the Women in Turf at conferences, at schools and host leadership development workshops. Empowering Women to become future Superintendents is going to be a challenge as there aren’t many, but in time I hope to see the numbers change. I also want to take this group to a new level of networking because social media opens up more channels and chances to network and eventually effectively impact the turf industry by promoting more women in the turf industry. There are many women who are apart of turfgrass management, from out on the field of management of sports fields to soil scientist, we are all interconnected through turfgrass. Women in Turf is a community to interact with women worldwide and share each other’s passion.

Women in Turf is Dedicated to INSPIRE Women to pursue their dreams in the turf world.
